Production of thread inserts - This is how it works at BaerCoil®

Wire thread inserts are an inexpensive and practical way to repair or strengthen threads. As a manufacturer of threaded inserts, we pay special attention to a careful production process and are happy to let you take a look behind the scenes. Follow us into the production of thread ed inserts and find out which steps are necessary for the production of threaded inserts.

1. step in the production of wire thread inserts – production of raw material

The production of our thread inserts starts with the raw material. Here we place particular emphasis on high quality and materials with high tensile strength. For most applications, we use high-strength stainless steel alloys, but occasionally we also use materials such as bronze.

The steel alloy is initially still in a solid state and must be melted in the furnace at high temperatures before the production of the thread inserts can continue. The molten steel is then extruded, i.e. pressed through an opening under pressure. This produces a long wire that is wound into coils.

At the end of this step in the production of the thread inserts, we therefore have large rolls of wire that can now be processed further.

2. step in the production of wire thread inserts – forming the wire

The wire on the coils still has a round shape. However, if you have ever held a BaerCoil® thread insert in your hand, you will know that the wire in the finished product is diamond-shaped. This cross-section offers the highest performance while taking up the least amount of space. So the production of the threaded inserts now proceeds with shaping the wire into the desired shape. To do this, we pass it through a series of rollers that gradually create the diamond-shaped profile. This step in the production of thread inserts is called "rolling". Since this is done below the so-called recrystallization temperature, it is also referred to as "work hardening." This makes the material stronger, harder and also gives it a smoother surface.

The formed wire is then wound onto a large spool again to be transported to the next station.

3. step in the production of thread inserts – forming the wire thread inserts

So the wire now has a diamond-shaped cross-section. What follows is the actual production of the thread inserts. To do this, the wire is again unwound from the large spool and fed into a machine. This machine rolls up the wire in a spiral and thus creates the typical shape of the thread insert. Each finished thread insert is then cut from the wire. At this point in the production of the thread insert, the machine also mills the predetermined breaking point into the wire, which later ensures that the tang can be easily broken off after successful installation. Then the thread insert falls into a container.

After this step in the production process, the thread insert has thus reached its final shape: a small wire spiral with a diamond-shaped profile.

4. step in the production of wire thread inserts – cleaning of wire thread inserts

A lot of cutting oil is used in the production of thread inserts. Other deposits from production also adhere to the thread inserts. Therefore, the next step is to clean them. This is done in a drum washer. These are huge industrial washing machines that nevertheless work a bit like your washing machine at home. Inside is a long drum that rotates constantly, gently but thoroughly cleaning the threaded inserts of all residue from production. The cleaned thread inserts fall out of the machine at the end and are collected again in containers.

So now we have a clean thread insert as you know it from our range.

5. step in the production of wire thread inserts – quality control

In the production of thread inserts, the next step is particularly close to our hearts at BAER. Now it's time for quality control. Here we ensure that no thread insert leaves production that does not meet our high quality standards. Quality control involves a series of tests and inspection procedures. First, we measure the individual parts and make sure that nothing has gone wrong in the manufacture of the thread inserts. Surface roughness is also checked here. We then also carry out assembly tests in which the inserts have to prove themselves in practice. Only when all measurements are to our satisfaction and we are sure that all specifications are met do we move on to the next station.

The manufacture of the threaded inserts is now complete. The threaded inserts are clean, measured and tested and ready for use!

6. step in the production of wire thread inserts – packing

After passing the quality control, the production of our thread inserts is completed and they can be packed. A machine is also used for this purpose. This automatic packaging machine weighs the thread inserts and can precisely bag the desired quantity of thread inserts based on this data. But packaging is not just for dividing up packaging units. In the bag, the thread inserts are also optimally protected to arrive at your premises in pristine condition.

The finished thread inserts are now securely packaged and waiting to be shipped.

7. step in the production of wire thread inserts – storage and shipping

The packed thread inserts first go to our warehouse. Especially popular products we always keep in stock here in sufficient quantities to be able to supply you quickly and flexibly. In order to maintain an overview and avoid errors, a good system in the warehouse is indispensable. We work with scanners and modern IT, which allow us to have an overview of the stock in real time at any time and make it easy for us to match the production of thread inserts to demand. When you place an order with us, an employee removes the desired products from our warehouse and prepares them for shipment. Here, too, we pay special attention to care, so that every order reaches you in the same quality in which it leaves our warehouse. And a short time later you will already hold our shipment in your hands and can repair or strengthen your threads with thread inserts from our production.
